K, I know what you're thinking; Not a Cheech & Chong movie.
Although maligned by "proper society", Cheech & Chong have earned their place in pop culture. "Up in smoke" was their inagaural foray into film and arguably their best.
This film starts out as our hero "the man" played by Chong is getting a serious lecture by his parents on his lax work ethic. Grabbing his finest stash and pirating the grille from his dad's Rolls Royce for his beat-up Volkswagen he sets out for greener pastures.
Cheech finds Chong dressed in drag hitchhiking on the freeway (his bug since departed) and picks him up. From here one of the funniest sequences in movie history ensues. Through smoking dog droppings to accidentally taking acid they find a bond and they decide to start a band. During band practice their house gets raided by INS. Deportation to Mexico quickly follows where they pick up a van which supposedly contains upholstery. As it turns out the entire van is made of genetically altered marijuana.
The sub-plot involves their endless search for reefer and the police's (led by Stacey Keach's SGT. Standanko) insipid effort to find them. One of the best of these scenes takes place at Cheechs' cousin Red's (Tom Skerrit) house where we fing SGT. Stadanko and crew undercover in a laundry van peering out of the zipper on a pair of jeans.
The movie concludes as our heroes and the female company they pick up on the road enter a Punk Rock contest and perform with Cheech dressed in a pink tutu and Chong as a giant Quaalude.
This movie is in my opinion the best of the genre.

| | | | Most of the players in the film were friends and relatives of Cheech and Chong.
Up in Smoke was shot with a very small budget and became one of the most sucessful movies of 1978 spawning 5 other films bu the duo.
Quentin Tarantino is a huge fan of this movie and used the same film angle in his car scenes of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in "Pulp Fiction".
The car that Chong drives at the beginning of the movie is actually owned by Jack Nicholson.
The payphone that Pedro (Marin) is talking into in Mexico was a prop. The fake phone was supposed to be stuck onto the wall with double sided tape, but it kept falling down. Because of this, he had to speak with his hand on the prop to keep it from falling.
